Chick fil A: Where's the Hate?

Let me get this straight.  A privately owned company has a president who expresses his personal views, values, and opinions in an interview, and all of a sudden Chick-fil-A is being compared to the likes of hatemongers?

Am I missing something?

Last time I checked, just because somebody has an opinion different than yours doesn't mean that they're hateful.  If someone went and saw the Dark Knight Rises and said they didn't like it, I wouldn't accuse them of hating me because I liked it.  Its funny how we fight for the rights of the First Amendment, but only when the expression fits our beliefs.  We're at the point of where we are so "PC" that if someone disagrees with our opinion on anything we take it personally, like we're being attacked.  And I'm not just talking about the homosexual community, who is at the heart of this current controversy.  I'm talking about most communities in America, including the Christian community!

I would never advocate actual hate towards people.  When someone crosses the line of stating their convictions, beliefs, or values to expressing hatred and anger towards any person, I find that shameful and un-Christlike (i.e. Westboro Baptist Church).  At the same time, those who verbally express such protests have every right according to our First Amendment.  I can't deny that.

What's so baffling about the whole Chick-fil-A "controversy" is that someone stated their values with no intention of showing hate or discrimination in their personal life or the way their business serves its customers, and the response has been "hate-filled" from the ones who disagree with the opinions expressed by Dan Cathy (Chick-fil-A President).

So those accusing Cathy of hateful actions, are responding with hate.  From my vantage point, I see nothing hateful with Cathy's expression, but I see much hate in some of the response to it.  Not only do I see hate in response, I see a complete regard for common sense and intelligent thinking.

The response of the mayors of cities like Boston and Chicago prove this point.  They're saying there's no room for businesses like Chick-fil-A in their cities.  Reverse this....imagine if a conservative town's mayor said there was no room for businesses like Starbucks or Apple because their ownership supports gay rights.  The shame would be spun over on that mayor, not the businesses.

Boston's Mayor, Thomas Menino, had some strong words for Chick-fil-A in his attempt to drive the business away from his city.  In the process, he received much criticism.  In his own defense he said, "But I have feelings . . . I have my First Amendment rights also. I’m expressing them."
Interesting that he admits he has his "First Amendment rights also".  So he can criticize a business owner for using First Amendment rights and say there's no place for that in his city, while simultaneously expressing his First Amendment rights?  That makes absolutely NO SENSE.  Its complete hypocrisy.  Its hate.

I know America's becoming a more "tolerant" nation, but tolerance of pure hypocrisy?  That's what's being done here.  The hate is clear in this latest controversy.  Its coming from the Chick-fil-A protestors, not from Chick-fil-A.

You forgot to mention how Cathy donated millions of dollars in company profits (not his personal fortune) to groups that support stripping gay Americans their rights. It's all on the Internet if you'd like to google which non-profits they donated to. Talk is talk but when you throw tax deductible donations into the mix that's where the anger comes from. If you're going to blog about current events do yourself and your readers a favor and include all the facts. Great post though, I agree with freedom of speech and the mayors have no right to deny a business license based on the first amendment.
