Giving Up Lent

Its almost time for Lent, a time for Christ-followers to heighten self-sacrifice and quicken focus on Christ as Holy Week and Resurrection Day approach on the horizon.
Normally, I don't give up anything for Lent.  I'm not against the practice, but I'm also not biblically convinced that its necessary.  Regardless of this, I am preparing to participate this year.  I have many different reasons, but ultimately its all about timing.  I believe God has orchestrated some events in my life that has got me thinking that there are things in my routine that I need to push aside so that I can focus on what really matters.  Its an encouraging time to do this during Lent when other believers are also trying to make the same sacrifices.

In a week, I am headed out to the California desert for 1 month.  Needless to say, I won't have much opportunity to enjoy the luxuries I normally do.  Sadly, its taking this training for my job to make me realize that I don't need many of the things that I fill my life with.  Since I will not be having much access to my phone, a computer, or social media, I don't think my sacrifice will be terribly difficult.  However, I am making the choice to go ahead and begin my "period of lent" a little early.

With that said, I have decided to give up Facebook starting tomorrow.  I am making the commitment to stay off of it until after Easter.  Even further, I am going to be staying off all social media (Twitter, Instagram, Linked in, and yes, that includes Blogger) for this time.

I realize this isn't anything major.  However, I prayerfully want to use this time to grow closer to God.  I want to fill more of my life with Him.  I want to be in tune with His purposes as I prepare for challenging opportunities of ministry.  God is good and I'm excited about what He is going to show me over the next month and a half!  The Easter season always seems to highlight that for me.  My hope is that it will highlighted in such a way this year that it permanently imprints some amazing truths in my life.  My goal is to have a renewed vigor and fresh passion for doing Christ's work.

Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
Psalm 46:10
